"Projections" (2010, Animation, Running time: 6:18)
"Projections" looks into the gap between the here and elsewhere that makes up an individual's sense of place and ability to grasp one's nation as a whole. In it, a scrolling landscape drifts past, inspired by shadowplays and made from paper silhouettes digitally cut from the election results maps. Moving across the bottom of the screen, a ticker tape reports fanciful impressions of what I think lies in the unknown regions of my own home-country. Instead of a domestic landscape bounded by territories of self and other, I see in the map's vague and overlapping dots a reflection of my own experiences within a mixed and complicated population.
The piece has been shown in the group show 'Territories' at the Zhou B. Center in Chicago and as part of the film and video festival 'Lightworks' in Grimsby Minster, UK.
